The Teacher from the Black Lagoon by Mike ThalerNeed a last-minute book to read during the first days of a new school year? Grab one of Thalers Black Lagoon books. They saved my life today.
Yes, I know, as an elementary librarian, I should have read this series years ago. I just never got around to it. Today--crazy day--2nd grade is walking in for their first story time and I am doing the headless chicken routine, so in desperation I grab this book and Miss Nelson is Missing. Again, yes, I know you should never read a book to a class when youve not previewed it. But I trusted Mike Thaler completely, boy, did he come through!
The kids were paying attention, giggling, saying to themselves, Our teachers not like that! and when I was done the kids checked out all the Miss Nelson books and several from this series.
The Gym Teacher from the Black Lagoon
The first week of school is a busy time for teachers. Use read alouds to help with your overwhelming to-do list. It is hard to find the enough time to get to know your students, teach class procedures, give beginning of the year assessments, and all of the other tasks on your growing list. Integrate some of these tasks with books so you can check things off your to-do list quicker. You may get a new student during the school year. Keep a copy of the forms, newsletters, and other handouts that you are sending home to parents the first week of school, so you can send them home with the new student.
But how can anyone stay in shape juggling scarves, balancing feathers, and doing the Chicken Dance? Whatever happened to freeze tag or dodgeball? But when a prank war breaks out just before the big overnight class trip, Max has no choice but to pull off the funniest prank ever! Gunker dragons, duck smugglings, stolen suitcases, lethal super-beans, and the greatest prank ever played are just some of the hilarious antics in store. He wants to climb to the top of the Ella Mentry School flagpole. He even kissed a pig on the lips and painted his bald head orange.
