Enders Game (Enders Saga, #1) by Orson Scott Card

Andrew Ender Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. The only way to find out is to throw Ender into ever harsher training, to chip away and find the diamond inside, or destroy him utterly. Ender Wiggin is six years old when it begins. He will grow up fast.

But Ender is not the only result of the experiment. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway almost as long. Enders two older siblings, Peter and Valentine, are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. While Peter was too uncontrollably violent, Valentine very nearly lacks the capability for violence altogether. Neither was found suitable for the militarys purpose. But they are driven by their jealousy of Ender, and by their inbred drive for power. Peter seeks to control the political process, to become a ruler. Valentines abilities turn more toward the subtle control of the beliefs of commoner and elite alike, through powerfully convincing essays. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails.

The classic science fiction novel, and the beginning of the Wnder saga. Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards. In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race's next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn't make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training. Ender's skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders.

There are few stories out there that launch and define an author's entire career, but that's exactly what Ender's Game did for Orson Scott Card when the story was first published by Analog magazine. As a child, he read often, and picked up science-fiction and military history stories at an early age. In his teens, he read Isaac Asimov 's Foundation trilogy, and was immediately struck with an idea, inspired somewhat from his own brother's experiences in the military: how would one train soldiers in microgravity? The idea stuck with him for several years and he wrote it as a short story. He conceived of a character named Ender, a child, because he realized that "adults would already have so many gravity-centered habits that it would be very hard for them to train them to completely rethink their way of relating to space," Card said in a recent interview. He tried the story in a couple of other markets before making some changes and returning it to Bova, who then accepted it in June

Set at an unspecified date in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind after two conflicts with the Formics , an insectoid alien species they dub the " buggers ". In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, children, including the novel's protagonist, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin , are trained from a very young age by putting them through increasingly difficult games, including some in zero gravity , where Ender's tactical genius is revealed. The book originated as a short story of the same name , published in the August issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. Later, by elaborating on characters and plot lines depicted in the novel, Card was able to write additional books in the Ender's Game series. Card also released an updated version of Ender's Game in , changing some political facts to reflect the times more accurately e.

In an effort to head off a potentially damaging boycott of the sci-fi epic Ender's Game , sources close to the film's producers have claimed controversial author Orson Scott Card, who wrote the original novel the film is based on, will not profit from the film's box-office take. According to the Wrap , insiders have suggested that Card's deal with producers does not include "backend", ie, a percentage of the money taken at the box-office. The film's backers have been in panic mode ever since a boycott call was launched by an organisation called Geeks Out , protesting at Card's views on gay marriage, as well as his comparison of President Obama to Hitler. All those connected to the film have been forced on the defensive , with actor Harrison Ford defending Ender's Game by claiming "There is nothing in the film or the book addressing [Card's] current dispositions, or prejudices", and director Gavin Hood saying: "It has been a real dilemma for me: I love the book The Wrap's sources are also at pains to point out that, despite his producer credit, Card has had no creative input into the production.
