This biography is from Swami Sivanandaji's book "Lives of Saints". Valluvas are Pariahs now called Harijans and their vocation was proclaiming the orders of the king by beat of drum. There is a tradition that Thiruvalluvar was the son of one Bhagavan, a Brahmin, and Adi, a Pariah woman whom he had married. Thiruvalluvar was born at Madurai, the capital of the Pandyas. He is regarded as an Avatara of Brahma. His wife Vasuki was a chaste and devoted lady, an ideal wife, who never disobeyed the orders of her husband, but always carried them out implicitly.
About years ago, deep in the south of bhAratham , there lived a simple and noble young woman by name Vasuki. She was the daughter of an affluent farmer, an ordinary village girl. Some say, they, Vasuki and her family, lived somewhere in the present day Chennai , which was and is actually Mylapore. She lived near where a young weaver lived. Her Father, the farmer, who sow the weaver grow up; was very much impressed by this young weaver with Divine attributes. Therefore, He, the Father decided to give Vasuki in marriage to this weaver boy.
Posted by Kannan on November 26, in Aram , Thirukkural. The English Translation lost the whole essence of the Teaching. It is in fact the qualities of virtuous wife, not a spouse. I agree. I had done translated this chapter many years ago, and I guess, I had tried to sanitize the original. Will relook at it.

But when it comes to Tamilnadu, the way they brag about their own greatness has some truth added with exaggeration. As another poems claims:. Even before the stone and earth was formed This is the primordial community which appeared with a sword. So when it comes to the topic of women, as a Tamilian, I was a bit shocked how women are condemned and attacked in Tamil literature by saints like Ramalinga Vallalar. Though Tamilians tend to brag about the way they give freedom and show respect to women, they depict them in the worst terms in their literature and treat them badly in real life. Tamil zealots always hide behind the glorious period of the Sangam age when women enjoyed equal and sometime more rights than men.
She was the wife of the Tamil poet-philosopher Valluvar. Very little is known about the life of Vasuki other than her being the wife of Valluvar. According to Maraimalai Adigal , Vasuki was also known as Nagi. As a token of gratitude, Margasahayan offered Valluvar his daughter in marriage. Legend has it that Valluvar requested Vasuki to place a toothpick and a bowl of water alongside his dinner plate every day. Strangely as it may seem, Valluvar never used either of the two that he requested. This, however, did not deter Vasuki from following what her husband said even once.
