Poems of Childhood by Eugene Field

This little book is one of the treasures of my childhood, along with A Childs Garden of Verses. I remember my parents reading this to me and I have continued to read it throughout my life. It contains such wonderful poems.....some of my favorites are: Wynken,Blynken and Nod, The Rock-A-By Lady, Seein Things, and the one that always makes me get tears in my eyes, Little Boy Blue (not Little Boy Blue come blow your horn). It is a joy to revisit these sweet and sometimes sad little verses and this book is a classic of childhood poetry. I highly recommend it for your children or for yourself.

I Remember My Childhood - Poem by Lovina Sylvia Chidi

Henry Vaughan was a Welsh Metaphysical Poet, although his name is not quite so familiar as, say, Andrew Marvell. This simple nine-line poem describes how the poet is filled with joy when he sees a rainbow, and how he hopes he will always keep that sense of enchantment with the natural world. This poem explores the wide-eyed innocence that a child has when they first look out on the world, which eventually gives way to a more jaded cynicism involving a lowering of expectations, especially towards our fellow human beings. It was written in , just after the end of WWII. Listen to Thomas read the whole poem here. This classic Heaney poem, published in his first published volume, the book Death of a Naturalist , is simultaneously about picking blackberries in August and, on another level, about a loss of youthful innocence and a growing awareness of disappointment as we grow up. I would leave a comment but I am off to play Barbies instead Amy - I was never allowed to have any pets as a kid except fish, but it's hard to love a fish, or have an adventure with a fish and I remember promising myself that when I grew up, I would have a TON of pets - and I did, and then I found out how much work it was, so now we're down to a reasonable amount - just six cats. Thanks for reminding me of all this. Hi Amy, I try to remember, but sometimes cringe when I ask one of those questions. Thanks for the friendly, reminder poem with a precious photo too.

Brave New Voices 2010 - "Childhood"

In spite of this fact, it is good to know that the home of your youth is still there. It is nice to know that our parents are still living there, and that your bedroom is just as you left it. This provides a certain of stability as you struggle to build your own house and home. Eventually it is likely that your parents will sell the family home and begin their retirement years. You may feel that that the home that you have established has fully become your real home. It takes a heap o' livin' in a house t' make it home, A heap o' sun an' shadder, an' ye sometimes have t' roam Afore ye really 'preciate the things ye lef' behind, An' hunger fer 'em somehow, with 'em allus on yer mind.

There's nothing like the first love. You've never had these feelings before and you imagine that no one else has ever felt this way about anybody. Your boyfriend or girlfriend are the greatest thing ever and you want to be with them all the time. Your senses become alive as you fall in love for the first time. You're not even thinking of the possibility that you may break up because that has never happened to you before. First love is filled with the optimism that you will be together forever.

There are some friendships that we remember forever. These are the friendships that were formed when we were children. The quality of sharing is not the same as in adult friendships. However, in a certain way the friendship has a deeper quality. It probably lacked that drama and intensity that is shared in adult friendships. At the same time there is a certain carefree quality that exists between two young children at play. They don't ask themselves complicated questions like whether they have enough in common.
