I saw it in the window of this sports store when we got out of the subway, just after I noticed I'd lost all the goddam foils. It only cost me a buck. The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I'll admit, but I liked it that way.

Jul 17, AM. The red people hunting hat that Holden wears is very symbolic and everyone can interpret it differently. I think of it as something that gives him confidence, he wears it when he writes about Allie's baseball glove but, he can also be self conscious about it, too, he takes it off sometimes because he doesn't want to look suspicious and wears when he doesn't think he's going to see anyone he knows. But I still think it gives him some kind of confidence, it makes him feel good. And then at the end of the novel, Phoebe takes the red hunting hat out of Holden's pocket and puts it on his head.
