We are just starting to plan. Did anyone use a particular guidebook for help planning an itinerary that they found that did or did not work well? We have days for NZ. We do enjoy outdoor activities but nothing too extreme. We currently are looking at a Fodors on NZ. Since we probably will fly into Auckland , we'd do a few days in North Island and the rest in South Island but assume we have to get back to Auckland to fly home. You will need to fly home to the States from Auckland but from Melbourne you can fly into Queenstown , Christchurch or Wellington which may save backtracking.
