I n spite of the decline of the Navy, emotionally we are still a seafaring nation, and we have our nautical novels to prove it. So popular - and so lucrative - does the tradition continue to be that publishers are falling over each other to discover the next big thing. C S Forester's Hornblower novels are the most famous and probably the most accessible of the genre. Published between and the author's death in , they recreate the Napoleonic wars with an eye for detail that has come to characterise the nautical novel. But in terms of sheer power of writing, Forester is outgunned by both Captain Marryat , author of Mr Midshipman Easy , and Patrick O'Brian , whose man-o'-war skipper Jack Aubrey has become a cult for armchair sailors. Each has recently been celebrated with a biography that is at least as intriguing as anything they themselves ever wrote.
It's Metafilter's 20th anniversary! To celebrate, scan some cats or help fund Mefi! Forester's Horatio Hornblower books. Can anyone suggest any other series like these focused on naval warfare during the Napoleonic wars so I can continue on my reading binge? Every few weeks I stand in my local bookstore in front of a shelf sagging with Dudley Pope's Ramage novels and I wonder if I should start reading them or if, after O'Brian, they'll disappoint. I haven't read one yet, but I'm tempted. The "Alexander Kent" actually Douglas Reeman novels featuring the career of one "Richard Bolitho" were favorites of mine years ago.
Mar 04, AM. I think Patrick O'Brian is a writer of surprising virtuosity, especially in the way he handles narrative summary and the passage of time. Mar 05, AM. I remember stopping short the first time i encountered one of these jumps. A little puzzled, i continued reading and just accepted that O'Brian had moved on to the next interesting part of the story and i was thankful that there was no filler to get me from A to B. The author and I were now at point B and we could go on from that point. I like it.

If, like me, you didn't go to see Eragon because it looked rubbish, the bad news is that more dragon films are pending: Peter Jackson, the man behind The Lord of the Rings, has bought the rights to Naomi Novik's Temeraire series. The good news is that the books are terrific. It is compulsory to say they are like Patrick O'Brian with dragons, which is a bit much, but they are swashbuckling, coherent and well-written: the dialogue, in particular, avoids the traps of anachronism while remaining fresh. Plenty of intrigue, swordplay, exotic locations, plausible invention. In short, a treat.
