Stefani detailed the story as to how she came up with the song, and stated that the creative idea came about while she went out in the past for a jog, and decided to make a Christmas song that revolves around a prayer-like theme and tone to it. However, in the middle of recording the song, she thought to herself that it might be possible that she had heard the song before in a church, after which she consulted her devoted boyfriend and previous co-coach at the television show, "The Voice," Blake Shelton. As it turns out, Shelton liked the song so much that he even decided to record it for his own Christmas album.
